The Blood Center of
New Jersey was established in 1947 as the Essex County Blood Bank. We
began operations in two rooms in Newark City Hospital (presently UMDNJ-University
Hospital). Today, our administrative and medical departments are
headquartered at 45 South Grove Street in East Orange, New Jersey. Here,
blood collected throughout northern and central New Jersey is processed,
tested, and stored for hospital patients' needs. We are open 24 hours a
day for blood needs by our hospitals. Our donor centers are located in
West Orange and Parsippany, and blood drives are held in civic, community,
and corporate settings daily.
As the blood center
increased its services and programs, the Essex County Blood Bank became
known as the North Jersey Blood Center in 1975, and as The Blood Center of
New Jersey in 1996.
The Blood Center of
New Jersey supplies over 100,000 blood products annually to the hospitals
and medical centers of New Jersey. The Board of Trustees is comprised of physicians and
surgeons specializing in varied disciplines, and business and community
leaders.

The mission of The
Blood Center of New Jersey is to serve the patients, physicians, hospitals
and medical centers in New Jersey by providing the safest, most
technologically advanced blood and blood products of the highest quality.
We will adhere to the highest possible medical and technical standards,
maintain licensure with the federal and state regulatory agencies, and
accreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks. We will
promote and encourage blood donation by volunteer donors as a vital civic
responsibility and advance the knowledge of transfusion medicine through
educational programs.
