Kudos
to Blood Group Sponsors |
THINK YOUR GROUP IS TOO SMALL TO CONTRIBUTE?
Pictured on far left is Maureen Kaufman, acting executive
director of the Westfield/Mountainside Chapter of the American Red Cross.
In the middle is Michael Kaufman, president of Cox Printers of Garwood. He
is surrounded by a group of his employees.
Cox Printers in Garwood wanted to participate in the
voluntary blood donation program but did not have enough employees to
sponsor its own blood drive. So what did they do? They contacted the Blood
Center of New Jersey who hooked them up with the Westfield/Mountainside
Chapter of the American Red Cross. The ARC runs blood drives in Westfield
every other month. On October 4, the drive opened early to accommodate a
small group of 8 employees from Cox Stationers who carpooled over during
work time, donated, and carpooled back. Kudos! Six more units of blood
were collected at this drive than would have been without the additional
participation of a local company making a difference.

On May 13, 2006 Immaculate Conception Parish conducted a Blood Drive
sponsored by the Blood Center of New Jersey. Over thirty parishioners
and friends of the parish participated in this event making our first
Blood Drive a success. The mission of The Blood Center of New Jersey is
to serve the patients, physicians, hospitals and medical centers in New
Jersey by providing the safest, most technologically advanced blood and
blood products of the highest quality. The Blood Center of New Jersey
supplies over 100,000 blood products annually to the hospitals and
medical centers of New Jersey.
We would like to extend a special thank you to all those in the
community who participated in this event. People like you make the
difference between life and death for hundreds of patients in our
community hospitals each year.

On Monday, December 19, 2005, East Orange General
Hospital (EOGH) hosted their annual blood drive sponsored by The Blood Center
of New Jersey. The event was held in
honor of Shakil Williams, an eleven year old Newark boy who suffered from Acute
Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). Tragically,
young Shakil died on the eve of the blood drive, however, EOGH continued to show support by donating blood and bone
marrow. Forty-two EOGH employees and
additional family members took part in the blood drive, including the hospital’s President and CEO, Kevin
Slavin. Additionally, thirteen blood
drive participants joined the National Bone Marrow Registry. Impassioned by the overall experience, EOGH
management and employees are already making plans to host a second blood drive
on July 17, which is an EOGH first in over 20 years of hosting blood
drives. Participation in the summer
blood drive will be open to all EOGH employees, their families and the general
public.

Once again, the community has responded to the need
for blood donations over the holiday weekend. Four churches in Passaic and
Morris Counties ran blood drives on Good Friday, March 25 this year, with
a total registration number of 316 and 281 units of blood collected! Our
thanks to all of the donors who came out to donate and to the churches
that dedicate time and effort to making these drives successful.
The four churches are:
St. James Roman Catholic Church – Totowa
Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church - Wayne
St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church – Long Valley
St. Philip’s Roman Catholic Church – Clifton
Also, special thanks to Congregation Oheb Shalom in South Orange, Metro
