What is
Apheresis?
An apheresis donation
is the donation of one component of blood, usually platelets or plasma. During
the apheresis procedure, blood is drawn from your arm and passed through a
collection kit in a blood-separating machine which separates the platelets
or plasma and returns the rest of your blood to you.
It is an extremely valuable donation. A platelet apheresis donation yields
6-10 times the platelets as can be gotten from a Whole Blood donation and
is frequently used for cancer patients and patients undergoing organ
transplants. For type AB donors, Plasma Apheresis is greatly needed. Type
AB is considered the universal plasma donor type and two times as much
plasma is received from a plasma apheresis donation.
